Grain-Free Diets

In light of recent media coverage surrounding the use of grain-free diets, we wanted to have information regarding it available.  We know you all love your fur-babies and only want the best for them, as do we!! Please feel free to call the office if you have further questions.

Veterinary cardiologists have recently become concerned about a link between grain-free diets and heart disease in dogs. Dr Lisa Freeman, a veterinary nutritionist, states: “Contrary to advertising and popular belief, there is no research to demonstrate that grain-free diets offer any health benefits over diets that contain grains.”  She goes on to say: “Grains are an important source of protein and other nutrients in many meat-based pet foods. Grains have not been linked to any health problems except in the very rare situation when a pet has an allergy to a specific grain.”
What we recommend: Instead of avoiding grains, we recommend selecting a pet food that contains high-quality ingredients, is made by a manufacturer with strong nutritional expertise and rigorous quality control, and has the right nutritional profile for the individual pet. Look for the AAFCO label on any food that you purchase.
